Yerba Mate

Derived from a South American evergreen holly, (Ilex Paraguariensis), yerba maté deserves your attention if you’re health conscious. It is known by many names but is increasingly simply referred to as maté (pronounced “mah-tay”).

Long appreciated for its significant nutritional and medicinal properties, maté contains a multitude of vitamins & minerals, as well as other health promoting compounds. At least 196 active chemical compounds have been identified, (of which 144 are also common in green tea), including 11 polyphenols & saponins.

Scientists are still debating whether the level of caffeine in maté has any significant effect on the drinker. Some suggest the more active component is mateine; which produces stimulation similar to caffeine without the addictive qualities.

Like coffee, maté has a slightly astringent bitter taste & can be enhanced with sweeteners & other favourings. It’s often drunk as a healthful alternative to coffee.
